Holy hour: go to any Catholic Church when it is open, or if possible, to the Adoration chapel at St. Pius X (at 500 W Marquette St. Appleton, door code is 1 3 7 *), and spend one hour praying for a friend or a group of people in need of God's help. You may do at most 2 of your service hours in prayer. You can go anytime, but remember to text a picture of you at the chapel/church and what you prayed for so we can record your hour.
Report all hours or reach out for questions to the parish texting number, 920-714-8531.
Students pursuing Confirmation are required to serve 8 hours in a parish-sponsored volunteer event. Xavier students are also required to serve a given number of hours at the parish. All youth are welcome to serve as they are available and willing.
Clean the church: help adults and teens clean around the entire parish campus. Meet in the gathering space on Saturdays 7-9am on the following dates: Mar 15, Mar 29, Apr 12. No need to sign-up, just show up at 7am, and text us when you finish to record your hours.
Monthly service at St. Thomas More: Join on the 2nd Wednesday each month starting at 7:30pm (Feb 12, Mar 12, Apr 9) for a different service activity each month. Enter the main doors by the St. Thomas More entrance (on McDonald Street, about a mile from St. Therese). If you are coming to this, text us (920-714-8531) in advance so they can plan for you.
Catechism helpers and observers: Note, you may not miss your class or weekend Mass to do this, so you will need to plan ahead. There are classes 10:45-11:45am and 12:00-1:00pm Sundays, so you will need to go to Mass Saturday night or 9:00am Sunday to do these.
If you are hoping to be a catechist (teacher of the faith) someday, you can schedule an observation of a classroom/small group of the age you are interested in teaching. You will need to arrive early to meet with that catechist and will take notes using a guide we will provide. Then you need to reflect at the end with the catechist.
Anyone who enjoys working with younger kids can be a "prayer partner". Your job is to take a student into the hall to practice common Catholic prayers together and help them memorize them. We encourage bilingual students to learn prayers in English and Spanish, but expect mastery in at least one language. You start at the entrance desk and then will be assigned to a classroom.
For those with musical talent: please directly contact the director of whichever choir you would like to serve with after Mass. Plan for several practices and Masses in a short period of time. If you cannot find the person to speak with, text us and let us know which Mass and which choir you want to join.
St. Vincent de Paul: if you wish to serve at the SVdP store, first you need to get in their volunteer system -- complete that process here. Then, there are two options:
Teens or adults can call the store, (920) 739-1679, any weeknight or Saturday to volunteer on their own. Teens can only serve 1 at a time if you do not have an adult.
We will soon be arranging times where an adult will be present and can supervise a small group of up to 4 teens -- watch for info soon.
Breakfast serving and clean-up: help prepare, serve, and clean for a breakfast. These are run by parish groups -- next time you attend breakfast, ask a group when you can help serve. If you personally know family or friends in a group, ask them to join in serving. You may not miss class or Mass to help.
Construction tasks: Projects include hanging a door, installing heaters, measuring spaces, hauling stuff, renovating a room, and other fun things that old church buildings need. This is limited because you need to be assisted by church staff. Speak to Andy.
